When Mr. Swathe opened the door to the library, everything stopped. The books stopped flying and transforming. Nothing went back to normal, but at least everything was peaceful. Books littered the library floor, piles of colorful puddles sat where some of them had just melted like ice, birds flew around the room as though they had always been birds rather than simple collections of words on paper. It took Mr. Ashford and Mr. Swathe an hour to put everything back to normal. And no one had any idea what on Earth could have caused the strange phenomenon.
I slept in Oliverâs room that night. Actually, I didnât leave his side for the entire day.
That night, before I even went to sleep, I anticipated a nightmare. There was no way Iâd have a peaceful nightâs sleep after the day I had. And almost as soon as I laid down to fall asleep, in what felt like seconds, I opened my eyes to see the forest surrounding me once again.
This time, however, something was different. I sat there for a while, looking around the silent trees, trying to figure out what on Earth it was that made this dream different from all the others. There was mist, just like usual. The sky was the same cloudy gray as usual. I was barefoot and in my pajamas, as usual.
Finally, after what felt like half an hour, I realized what was strange about this time. Iâd never been aware that I was in a dream before. When I would find my consciousness in the forest, it always seemed like it was real, as unbelievable as the situation was. I couldnât remember ever having a dream where I had any idea that it was a dream. But this time, I was acutely aware of it. Moments before, I had been lying in Oliverâs arms in his bed as I fell asleep.
The thing was, this didnât feel like a dream. Despite knowing it was, it felt just as real-- No, it felt more real than any other dream had ever felt. I could feel the grass, dew, and old bark on the bottom of my feet, and I shivered when a chill blew through the air. I tried to imagine cuddling up to Oliver outside of my dream, but all I could sense was that moment in my mind, standing in the forest, just like Iâd never left.
I recalled what the boys had said a while back about waking myself up if I knew it was a dream. Brayson had mentioned it a few more times and tried to explain how to do it. He said shouting out for help could jolt your brain.
âHello?â I called loudly into the quiet air. âIs anyone here? Help me!â
I waited for a moment. Nothing. It hadnât worked.
âGreat.â I sighed. âWhat elseâ¦? Reading. He said reading could help.â
I didnât have a book with me, obviously. So I decided to conjure one. Maybe doing magic would also help my mind wake up.
